Project information

Once an inward-looking cottage plagued by its bursting footprint, House Lupe is today composed around simple moments for contemplation. The home has been designed to frame uncomplicated views to street-side and neighbouring planting while maintaining necessary inner-city privacy. The carefully placed openings introduce an abundance of natural light, shadow play, and ventilation to the space, without exposing the interior to the baking sun. In this way, the project is indebted to the masterful work of Luis Barragán, the Pritzker prize-winning Mexican Architect famed for his artful use of concealed skylights among other feats. The nod pays homage to LINTEL’s Director’s own cultural heritage.

Occupying no more ground than originally allocated, House Lupe evidences the transformative potential of tactful sequencing in its presentation of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open-plan kitchen, living and dining program. A brief alteration to the existing roofline accommodates the elevated master suite. Hardwearing concrete, brick and stone finishes inside reiterate the frankness of the once blue-collar neighbourhood, while timber veneer and textured paint surfaces soften the primary service areas to the touch.
